The Nanaimo Ladysmith School District is switching to EV buses.

Featured recently on the Plug in BC Go Electric Fleet Show, the district has been steadily transitioning its school bus fleet to electric vehicles (EV) since 2020. Today, the district operates 10 electric buses and has exceeded its CleanBC target, reducing fleet emissions by approximately 40%.

The benefits extend beyond emissions reductions. Students and drivers have highlighted quieter, smoother rides, while the district has realized substantial fuel savings compared with diesel vehicles.

One of the key lessons from the district’s experience is the importance of planning. Before expanding its fleet, the district completed a fleet electrification study that mapped out vehicle replacement schedules, charging infrastructure requirements, anticipated costs, and long-term operating savings.

As Mary Zuccaro, Commercial Energy Manager of the Year and Energy Manager for School District 68, notes in the video, the study provided a roadmap for what electrification could look like over the next 5, 10, and 15 years, helping the district make informed investment decisions.

The project also demonstrates the value of coordinating vehicle procurement, charging infrastructure, utility planning, and funding opportunities. Through a combination of BC Hydro support and other programs, the district developed a phased strategy that continues to guide fleet electrification across both school buses and maintenance vehicles.

For organizations considering electrification, a fleet electrification study can help answer critical questions:

  • Which vehicles are best suited for electrification?
  • What charging infrastructure will be required?
  • Is additional electrical service needed?
  • What are the long-term operating costs and savings?
  • What funding opportunities are available?

Prism Engineering supports organizations in evaluating fleet electrification opportunities through planning studies, infrastructure assessments, utility coordination, and implementation planning.
